Our thirst for meaning is a very powerful force, but it is double-edged. It compels us to keep seeking what we hope will fulfill our deepest yearnings even when faced with obstacles. It can, however, become the very obstacle that prevents us from reaching that goal.
A man looking for
meaning is like someone driven by thirst who digs deeper and deeper to find the
source that he hopes is hidden below. He exerts himself and displaces large
amounts of rocks, roots, and soil in the process. The mound – a veritable mountain – he creates in doing so is
testimony to the strength of his desire for water.
But what if he is digging
in the wrong place, and the mountain he creates covers the very spot where the
source was buried just below the surface, soon to surge forth…
Sometimes it is best
to seek by being still and waiting for the source to reveal itself to us.
